The Internet of Things is all around us. Our desire for more intelligent and connected devices keeps on growing. It was only a matter of time until 4G communication between cars and smartphones took off. But how does the process actually work?
The amount of connected cars is expected to increase in fivefold by 2025 according to Business Insider. That makes sense. By allowing our vehicles to connect through WiFi and 4G we open up a whole world of possibilities. The keyword here is data sharing.
Data sharing can involve anything from simply connecting with our surroundings (like a GPS warning about road construction), to more complex exchanges of data, like with other vehicles or pedestrians on the road.
EEVEE, as a third party app, uses a so-called V2C connection to analyse the data of your EV. V2C stands for ‘Vehicle to Cloud’, and allows for your vehicle to interchange data with a cloud analytics platform (such as EEVEE). Through V2C you, as a user, get access to real time data, which provides apps with all its functionality.
In order to establish a connection in the first place, EEVEE requests access to an API token linked to your car. This is a virtual key, provided by your car manufacturer, that allows for a safe and secure online connection. No worries, it is encrypted, so even EEVEE does not have access to your credentials.
After that, all necessary data between your car and EEVEE can be shared, so the app can provide you with useful insights regarding your driving/charging profile. Users can still decide to break off the connection by revoking the API token - this is not an everlasting bond.
Since increasingly more car manufacturers are providing API’s for businesses and developers, apps are quickly becoming indispensable tools in today’s electric driving experience. So expect to see a lot more mobile automotive innovation coming your way!
